Quantifying Seismic Source Parameter Uncertainties
نویسندگان
چکیده
We use data from a small aperture array in southern California to quantify variations in source parameter estimates at closely spaced stations (distances ranging from ∼7 to 350 m) to provide constraints on parameter uncertainties. Many studies do not consider uncertainties in these estimates even though they can be significant and have important implications for studies of earthquake source physics. Here, we estimate seismic source parameters in the frequency domain using empirical Green’s function (EGF) methods to remove effects of the travel paths between earthquakes and their recording stations. We examine uncertainties in our estimates by quantifying the resulting distributions over all stations in the array. For coseismic stress drop estimates, we find that minimum uncertainties of ∼30% of the estimate can be expected. To test the robustness of our results, we explore variations of the dataset using different groupings of stations, different source regions, and different EGF earthquakes. Although these differences affect our absolute estimates of stress drop, they do not greatly influence the spread in our resulting estimates. These sensitivity tests show that station selection is not the primary contribution to the uncertainties in our parameter estimates for single stations. We conclude that establishing reliable methods of estimating uncertainties in source parameter estimates (including corner frequencies, source durations, and coseismic static stress drops) is essential, particularly when the results are used in the comparisons among different studies over a range of earthquake magnitudes and locations.

PERFORMANCE BASED DESIGN OPTIMIZATION OF STEEL MOMENT RESISTING FRAMES INCORPORATING SEISMIC DEMAND AND CONNECTION PARAMETERS UNCERTAINTIES
One of the most important problems discussed recently in structural engineering is the structural reliability analysis considering uncertainties. To have an efficient optimization process for designing a safe structure, firstly it is required to study the effects of uncertainties on the seismic performance of structure and then incorporate these effects on the optimization process. In this stud...
متن کاملFully probabilistic seismic source inversion – Part 1: Efficient parameterisation
Seismic source inversion is a non-linear problem in seismology where not just the earthquake parameters themselves but also estimates of their uncertainties are of great practical importance. Probabilistic source inversion (Bayesian inference) is very adapted to this challenge, provided that the parameter space can be chosen small enough to make Bayesian sampling computationally feasible. We pr...

A new two-step approach is proposed to quantify the uncertainties of the seismicity rate ν(M) estimated by Gutenberg-Richter relations of seismic area source zones in logic tree-driven probabilistic seismic hazard analysis. The first step makes use of the possibility that the uncertainties of the Gutenberg-Richter parameters α and β (or a and b), expressed by their covariance matrix C(α, β) (or...
متن کاملEffects of uncertainty in rock-physics models on reservoir parameter estimation using marine seismic AVA and CSEM data
This study investigates the effects of uncertainty in rockphysics models on estimates of reservoir parameters from joint inversion of seismic AVA and CSEM data. The reservoir parameters are related to electrical resistivity using Archie’s law, and to seismic velocity and density using the Xu-White model. To account for errors in the rock-physics models, we use two methods to handle uncertainty:...

We introduce a new open-source toolkit for the well-tie or wavelet extraction problem of estimating seismic wavelets from seismic data, time-to-depth information, and well-log suites. The wavelet extraction model is formulated as a Bayesian inverse problem, and the software will simultaneously estimate wavelet coefficients, other parameters associated with uncertainty in the time-to-depth mappi...
